Jeanette Maxfield Lewis
Jeanette Maxfield Lewis, a native Californian, was born in Oakland, CA. She
became one of the best and brightest among the early California painters. Lewis had a long and
successful career as painter and etcher of note. She attended the California School of Fine Art,
then went to New York and studied under various important artists, but the major influence on
her work was mentor and teacher, Armin Carl Hanson.
Reminiscent of John Sloan, on the East coast, Lewis embraced everyday occurrences
and people within the drama of their lives. She won many awards for both her paintings and etchings
and was regularly accepted in the prestigious annual exhibitions of Americas printmaking
societies
